Some projects and results of the last 30 years:
- Establishment of a pioneering captive breeding programme of Black vultures in European Zoo’s, leading to large numbers of offspring for release into the wild.
- Recovery of the Black vulture on the island of Mallorca, the last island population of this species in the world.
- Reintroduction of Black vultures in French (Cevennes, Verdom and Baronies), where this species became extinct in the XIX century.
- Initiation of the reintroduction of the Black vulture in the Catalan Pyrenees with technical advisory of local entities, preparation of infrastructure, release of Black vultures and regional campaign against illegal use of poison.
- Development and implementation of the Balkan Vulture Action Plan (BVAP) in the Balkan region with participation of over 20 projects and 32 entities of Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Albania, Croatia and Greece.
- The fight against the illegal use of poison in Spain, Portugal and the Balkan region, creation of the Anti- Poisson Program and the launch of a European Secretariat against this serious conservation problem.
- Development of outreach campaigns and environmental education in all areas of activity.
- Support to the restoration of pastoralism practices in Spain, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, etc.
- Creation of Strategically Sustainable Tourism plans, infrastructure and ecotourism products in Bosnia & Herzegovina y Serbia.
- Strengthening Environmental Conservation Organisations and local authorities in all project areas.
- Land Stewardship in private estates and rural establishments in Mallorca.
- Creation of the sustainable Ecotourism market tool ProNature Travel.
The BVCF will continue its efforts for a sustainable future for the vultures, their habitats, the rural environment and the society as a whole. In order to achieve this, nature conservation and socioeconomic development must go hand in hand, strongly encouraging a healthy, viable and preserved environment for the next generations.
